You are a trainer, facilitator or leader, and you want to support a group to:
- 'see' the system, and see connections between parts
- create clarity at deeper levels, and sense what is emerging in the present and future
.....Generative scribing and systems scribing can support this!
Below a few examples, and some explanation:
What is it?
'Generative scribing' and 'systems scribing' are special practices of visual notetaking (but actually, it is about a deeper level of listening), and in this way serving a group of people that are in a dialogue. It was first described by an artist and trainer who really inspires me: Kelvy Bird.
One added value of this kind of scribing is that it can support collaboration, by bringing together the collective knowledge, that people see, or maybe do not see yet. Drawing can open up people's perspectives more, and increase understanding of a system.
In her book (also called Generative scribing), Kelvy describes it like this: ".... to 'presence' what a group or a social system wants to express, and then make it visible." "...the drawing establishes connections within content, aids with insight, and supports decision making".
The drawing can provide additional insight, and can support a group conversation, while the conversation is taking place. It can also be used as a tool for collective 'seeing' afterwards.
Generative scribing can be analogue (on paper), but can also be digital and shared digitally (in a conference call, online event, etc.). Perhaps a drawing is even more easy to read on a computer screen, then when it is hanging on a wall during a live meeting.
To clarify: when using this form of visual support, there is still a separate trainer/facilitator guiding the conversation. The artist is the 'second person', like with Graphic recording.
One example: Often, the most dominant people in the room greatly influence the conversation and the outcome, or most of the opinions are similar...
... a generative scribe can support the group to move the dialogue to a different level, explore other options or make a next step.
In this interview, Kelvy explains generative scribing in a simple way (first 2 minutes):
in june 2019 I participated in the "Visual Practice Workshop" of the Presencing Institute (trainers Kelvy Bird en Alfredo Carlo). I also participated in the Systems Scribing Lab of october 2019.
I feel so excited about what I learned there (for example more insight in how important listening is, and an open heart), and I am excited to put everything into practice!
I would love to create new partnerships with people or organizations, that also see the amazing value of generative scribing and systems scribing, preferrably in meetings that adress important ecological/social/spiritual issues. So that I can contribute with my work to the shift we are making as a society (from 'ego' to 'eco').
Are you interested to see what I can do for your organization? Or are you interested to work together? I am looking forward to connect!
Kelvy Bird works as a 'scribe' in the US, and collaborates with (among other partners) the Presencing insitute. This institute uses
"Theory U" by Otto Scharmer as a framework. It is about what serves our human society as a whole, and about "presencing", which is described as "the blending of sensing and presence, a means to connect from the Source of the highest future possibility, and to bring it into the now".
